Trackpad-equipped Handle Switch

Evolve your riding experience with familiar touch controls.

Features

  • Enjoy greater freedom with trackpad operation!
  • A sleek trackpad integrated into the curved handle switch.
  • Effortless control without taking your hands off the handlebars.
  • The trackpad supports operation while wearing gloves.
  • Direct load compatible (dimmer, turn signals, horn).

Element Technology

Sensor Technology:
Utilizes capacitive sensors with learning functionality.
Waterproof & Dustproof Technology:
Developed to achieve performance equivalent to our mass-produced products.
Communication Technology:
The trackpad interface is designed for flexible compatibility1

In addition to existing core technologies, we have incorporated capacitive sensor technology.

Design

We are offering familiar touch operation on the handlebar switch.

At present, Asahi Denso is providing operation for;
 Switch(alternate type, momentary type, etc.)
 Encoder
 Joystick

The trackpad is a proposal for next operation method.

The switch primarily utilizes {push-and-pull} operations.
The encoder utilizes rotational operations.
The joystick uses pushing operation in the desired direction.

The trackpad supports press-equivalent tapping operations, and the direction of operation encompasses all directions in which fingers move across the pad, enhancing freedom of use.
We aim for a similar operation feel to current smartphone and laptop touchpad operations.
We believe it will be useful for primarily infotainment operation.

This is a newly developed product, our first proposal.
We will be exhibiting a working model at the Japan Mobility Show 2025   , where you can experience the operation firsthand2.

The standard handlebar switch features a curved shape.
We have equipped it with a trackpad function while keeping the curved shape.

This results in a simpler design compared to handlebar switches with numerous switch placements.

The number of motorcycles equipped with display meters is increasing.

Operating the buttons or touch panel provided on the meter temporarily removes your hands from the handlebar.
With this handlebar switch, you can operate it with minimal hand detachment, even in such cases (benefit)3.

We aimed to create a user interface that allows for comfortable operation.

The trackpad utilizes a capacitive sensor system.

Previously, capacitive sensors could malfunction under certain conditions, preventing stable operation.
Now, we have adopted a sensor with high precision and sensing capabilities, and it is equipped with a microcontroller. It can react while wearing gloves, and it will not malfunction even when wet4.

Through these multiple conditions, it is now possible to adjust the sensing operation5.

The direct load switches are consolidated in approximately 25 percent of the overall handlebar switch area6.

The development product focuses on minimizing the necessary functions to the left-hand switch assy.
We also considered full electronic control, but this is a proposal that takes into account the mass production cost of the handlebar switch - due to direct load, it benefits not to need for a relay unit.

  1. The display models communicate via USB.
  2. As capacitive sensor trackpad.
  3. This is not intended for operation while driving. Please comply with the traffic laws of your country.
  4. This is achieved by learning the operating conditions of the sensors. It is not a universal solution.
  5. We have confirmed that it can distinguish between water and fingers thanks to the high-precision sensor - this is necessary because fingers contain water, just like human body tissue. We are developing this product with information gained from sensor manufacturers.
  6. The displayed development product utilizes a stable five-volt power supply for the electronic components. The electronic circuitry is not integrated within the handlebar switch body. We are using the sensor control board directly from the sensor manufacturer. The handlebar switch, sensor flexible board, and control software are all developed in-house.
  • Various considerations are being made based on Japan as the primary location.
